Benefits of Reading to a Child - What are the ways in which reading to a child, kid or toddler is beneficial?

I'm curious to know your own thoughts on the subject. I realize that it's an age-old question that parents deal with, but the answers I get always seem to have something unique in them. You own approach to reading to a child would be appreciated. I'm open to all ideas.
